King Blue Heron has only been a band since February 2023, but each member has been creating music separately for years. Berkin and DiBlasi both sing in other Pittsburgh-based bands, and Hardenberger played in other bands for years before moving to Pittsburgh from Richmond, Virginia. Willets has also played guitar in several successful projects. After the success of their debut single Ora Et Labora, which has over 10,000 Spotify streams, King Blue Heron have quickly become a staple of the Pittsburgh music scene with a sound different from any other band in the city.
King Blue Heron formed in February 2023 as a re-imaging of a project started by singer Emily Hardenberger and bassist Seth Berkin. Already long-time friends with musical chemistry, the lineup filled out with drummer Lucas DiBlasi and most recently guitarist Bailey Willets. The band released their first single "Ora Et Labora" in January 2024 and have continuously played shows in the Pittsburgh area for the past two years.
In May 2025, King Blue Heron released their double single “Salvation Sound”. Salvation Sound was mixed and mastered by Billy Mannino (Oso Oso, Macseal, Prince Daddy and the Hyena). While recording, mixing, and mastering has previously been DIY and done by members of the band, the band felt Salvation Sound was the right time to branch out and hear outside opinions from a reputable scene producer. Other aspects of the recording process were kept local, with drum tracking/mixing from Evan Yester and all other recording done directly by the band's own Bailey Willets.
